Celtic Events Presents Old Blind Dogs

Genre: Celtic
Doors: 6:30PM
Show: 7:30PM

The musical evolution of Old Blind Dogs began in Aberdeen in 1992 with roots that grew from the eclectic music scene that flourished in the Granite City during the early 90’s. Four musicians from very different musical backgrounds came together to create a full-time professional touring band with the aim of showcasing the rich tradition of songs and tunes of the North East of Scotland on an international stage. Like many of the early flag bearing Scottish folk bands, the Old Blind Dogs line up has faced inevitable changes over the years but the core values at the band’s musical heart continue to beat strong. The current band line up has been settled for several years now and consists of four of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians at the top of their game. Original member Jonny Hardie (fiddle/vocals) is joined by Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals), Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals) and collectively they comprise one of the hottest live tickets on the traditional Scottish music scene today. As recent inductees to the BBC ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Trad Music Hall of Fame’ the ‘Dugs’ will celebrate thirty years on the road in 2022 by launching their fourteenth studio album ‘Knucklehead Circus’ in Winter 2021. A joyous, uplifting and fun album full of compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm on which ‘OBD’ continue to innovate within their tradition while faithfully revealing its essence. Here’s to many more years of Old Blind Dogs!

I wish I’d known when I started out that the contents of an artist biography ends up being repeated many times in the years to come. It can be frustrating to be viewed through an outdated lens. But what’s to be done? The past, including old one-sheets, remains unshakable. I know you’re a busy person and, chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re here for the updated Cliffs Notes. So I’ll tell you what I’m proud of having done over the last 20 years and you decide for yourself if any of the soundbites interest you. I was born, raised and am currently residing in New England. I have four kids and married my high school sweetheart. I’ve written about them extensively on all my records. I also put out a book in 2020 called “Objects In The Mirror: Thoughts on a Perfect Life from an Imperfect Person.” It’s a collection of essays about what I’ve found to be the most important aspects of a life well-lived. For better or worse, my live show has morphed into one with a fair amount of comedy baked into the storytelling. I write what I believe to be true and I try to have a sense of humor about the stuff that hurts. My newest record is called Keep It Up, Kid and it comes out December 2, 2022. Side B is a suite of 5 interconnected songs that explore the journey from youth to middle-age. Side A is a note of solidarity to anyone looking for hope in hopeless situations. We are all alone in the world, but it’s nice to feel as though we are not. There have been some flattering quotes over the years, but the largest publication to offer up a humdinger was Rolling Stone, who in 2019, said I was like, “John Prine fronting the Heartbreakers.” My grandfather taught me not to believe my own propaganda, but I still work hard to fulfill the promise of such heady praise. In 2013, I delivered a Tedx Talk on job satisfaction and that has led to speaking engagements for some amazing organizations. I’ve also had the honor of performing at a number of children’s hospitals as well as for the U.S military, who gave me an “Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year” award. Those experiences have been enriching and I hope I’ve used my talents for good there. I’ve had some great adventures co-writing too and one of the singles I co-wrote, “Got Soul,” was the title track for Robert Randolph’s Grammy Nominated album of the same title. Although I have, on occasion, cracked the billboard charts, it has been a minute since all that went down, so I’ll just say that there is little that means more to me than the people who show up year after year, record after record. Take care of the art and the art will take care of you. In closing, I guess what I’m most proud of having done, the thing I’d want people to know about the first two decades of my career, is that I survived with my soul intact. I’ve played more than 2200 concerts, traveled Europe supporting Gregory Alan Isakov and Josh Ritter, sang duets with Adam Duritz and Rosanne Cash. I’ve sold out the 9:30 club, and performed at the Beacon Theater. I’ve made music in spite of the challenges and managed to build a life that resembles that of my listeners in all the ways that matter. I have not accomplished all that I intended for myself, but that’s why I’m playing another hand at the table. That’s the point of Keep It Up, Kid. Thanks for checking out my stuff.

Tickets on sale 8.12 at 10am! Glen Phillips

Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Doors: 7:00PM
Show: 8:00PM

Glen Phillips has always been a courageous and inviting songwriter. During his years as lead singer of Toad the Wet Sprocket, the band’s elegant folk/pop sound and his honest, introspective lyrics helped them forge a close bond with their fans. Since starting his solo career, Phillips has pared his music down to its emotional core, concentrating on the simple truths of love and relationships, with a profound spiritual understanding. Swallowed by the New takes on life’s difficult transitions and delivers some of the Phillips' most vulnerable songs. “I made this album during the dissolution of a 23 year marriage, Phillips says. “A major chapter of my life was coming to a close, and I discovered early on that I had to work hard to get through the transition with compassion and clarity. These songs were a big part of that process.”The album was recorded in May of 2015 with producer/bass player Paul Bryan (Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams), Jay Bellerose (drums), Chris Bruce (guitar), Jebin Bruni (keys) and Ruby Amanfu (vocals). The sparse arrangements are centered on Phillips’ vocals and acoustic guitar. Shimmering electric guitar accents drift through a curtain of sighing strings on Go, a ballad that bids a poignant farewell to a lover at the end of a relationship. “And though I want you close / This light can only glow / To warn you far away from shore / Saying I love you, now go,”Leaving Oldtown has the feel of a classic pop ballad, with a string section and piano supporting a poignant vocal, as Phillips describes a man, “hollow as a sparrow bone,” packing up his belongings as winter approaches. The Easy Ones focuses on the importance of staying present when it’s not easy or simple, but necessary. Joined in harmony with his 13-year daughter, Phillips says:“You can’t just love the easy ones / You’ve got to let them in / When you’d rather just run.”Amnesty is a gentle rocker, with twang-heavy guitars, a funky back beat and elegant string accents, it chronicles a long journey of searching for understanding and safe harbor. “I’m here to catch some kind of spark / In every face I see / And offer amnesty.” Held Up suggests a gospel tune being chanted by a chain gang. The stomping drumbeat and jubilant handclaps support a vocal that faces the scales of judgment; in balance between self-recrimination and salvation. “Brother you ain’t so broken / Sister you ain’t so small / Everybody goes together / Or nobody goes at all.”The folk hymn Grief and Praise was inspired by writer Martin Prechtel who maintains that “grief is praising those things we love and have lost, and praise is grieving those things we love and will lose”. It sums up the philosophy of the record in no uncertain terms:“For all that you love will be taken some day / By the angel of death or the servants of change / In a floodwater tide without rancor or rage / So sing loud while you're able / In grief and in praise”Swallowed by the New is full of the inviting melodies that have always marked Phillips’ work, while his singing reaches a new degree of intimacy and immediacy. The arrangements hint at country, soul, folk, rock and classic pop, without ever sounding derivative. The emotions may be raw, but they are guided by Phillips’ steady vocals towards healing and renewal.Phillips started Toad the Wet Sprocket in 1986, when he was still in high school. He was as surprised as anyone when their low-key folk rock landed them on the pop charts. When the band members decided to go their separate ways, Phillips began a solo career with Abulum followed by Winter Pays for Summer, Mr. Lemons and Secrets of the New Explorers. Always open to new projects and unlikely collaborations, he’s toured and recorded with Works Progress Administration, a band that included members of Nickel Creek, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Elvis Costello’s Attractions; Mutual Admiration Society with Nickel Creek; Remote Tree Children, an experimental project with John Askew and Plover, with Neilson Hubbard and Garrison Starr. His acoustic duo tour to support Swallowed by the Newstarts in October and will continue through the spring of 2017. “I enjoy the spontaneity of acoustic performance, where I can take the show wherever it needs to go and follow the lead of an audience instead of following a set list. There’s more talking, more stories, and more of a loose feel. The subject matter is on the serious side, but I feel like the perspective is ultimately positive. Life is about changes, no matter how we may try and pretend otherwise. This album is all about learning how to face change.”

Tickets on sale 9/30 at 10am! Sawyer Fredericks

Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Doors: 7:00PM
Show: 8:00PM

Americana singer-songwriter, Sawyer Fredericks, hailing from his family farm in central New York State, cut his teeth at the age of 13, playing local farmers markets, open mics, and iconic New York Venues like Caffe Lena, the Towne Crier Cafe, and The Bitter End. With his deep, beyond-his-years original lyrics and melodies, raw, soulful vocals, and powerful live performances, Sawyer seemed an unlikely match for reality tv, but having been scouted by casting directors at 15, he quickly won over broad audiences with his genuine delivery and unique arrangements of classic songs, going on to win season 8 of NBC's The Voice. Fresh from that whirlwind, Fredericks went forward with the release of his major label debut. A Good Storm, with Republic Records, an impressive blend of soulful Folk, blues and rock, entirely written or co-written by Sawyer. Choosing to go independent, for more creative freedom, his 2018 Hide Your Ghost, fully written and produced by Fredericks, sheds the high gloss major label treatment, and stays true to Fredericks's honest and elegantly stripped down style, a self-described "free range folk", incorporating elements of blues, roots rock and jazz with live instrumental arrangements throughout. In writing about his top ten Americana albums of 2018 in No Depression and AXS Magazine, Chris Griffy recommends Hide Your Ghost as "a bluesy folk rocker with a no-frills production that relies on Fredericks' raw voice to carry the emotional weight." With song premieres in People Magazine, American Songwriter, DittyTV and an album preview in Billboard, on May 1, 2020 Fredericks released his 4th album Flowers For You. "With his second independent album, Flowers For You, Fredericks is expanding his sound even more, moving from bluesy folk into more expansive Americana, rock and tines of jazz," remarks Chris Griffy in Concert Hopper. The album was included in No Depression Readers' 50 Favorite Roots Music Albums of 2020. Two songs from Flowers For You won top awards from the 18th annual Independent Music Awards, "Born" won in the Folk/Singer-Songwriter category and "Amen" won the Vox Pop award in the Social Action Song Category. Since the release of the album, "Born" has been in rotation on SiriusXM's Coffee House channel and was covered by Amazon Music's editorial 'Fresh Folk Americana' playlist. In January 2021 in advance of the inauguration, Sawyer released his rendition of the iconic "What A Wonderful World" with an accompanying animated video. After a pandemic imposed touring hiatus, Sawyer went back on the road with friends and collaborators, the Accidentals, in fall of 2021 for a 25-show run through the midwest, southeast and northeast, including stops at The Ark in Ann Arbor, multiple City Wineries, and Club Passim. Throughout his career, Sawyer has played many festivals and prestigious venues like the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival with 2019 touring highlights including official showcases at SXSW, AmericanaFest, Folk Alliance International, and BMI's Island Hopper Songwriter Fest. 2022 will find Sawyer back on the road, both locally and nationally, and returning to showcase at Folk Alliance as well.

To commemorate the milestone, Freddy Jones Band will release a brand new version of the song in mid-2022! Despite the band’s name, none of the members are named Freddy Jones. Freddy Jones Band is fronted by founding member, guitarist, and songwriter Marty Lloyd, who is joined by an all-star lineup that includes longtime band member and noted bassist, Rich Ross, who has also spent many years touring with The Samples. In addition to “In a Daydream,” Freddy Jones Band is known for other popular singles including “Take the Time,” “One World,” and many others. The band’s most recent release, “Never Change,” was produced by three-time Grammy-winning producer and engineer Justin Niebank (Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley). Niebank stated that “Never Change” was “the best record I’ve worked on in years.” Freddy Jones Band is currently touring to promote the 30th Anniversary of “In a Daydream,” as well as the release of their newest single, “Connected.” Another new single from Freddy Jones Band, “Mirror Ball,” will be released before the end of 2022!

Tyrone Wells

Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Doors: 7:00PM
Show: 8:00PM

First things first. Let’s get this out-of-the-way. Tyrone Wells (I) wrote this bio. I figured, “who better to talk about myself than myself?”. I’m a lot of things in no particular order… a preacher’s son, a brother, a husband, a dad, a real estate lover, a major-label artist, an independent artist, an opener, a headliner, a very self-conscious dancer (think “Footloose”, only without the cathartic cutting loose), a gardener, a wanna be surfer, a person who has needed therapy, a pickleball player, a barstool theologian, and this next one kind of goes without saying because you’re here reading my bio.. I’m a singer-songwriter. I’ve written a lot of songs. Probably approaching around 1,000 songs now… to me, when I wrote them, they were all good songs. The luxury of time has informed me, some of the songs were maybe just good to me. And some of the songs, inexplicably, have millions upon millions of listeners. Meanwhile, others have tens upon tens. I don’t know why, I just write them and set them free. Ultimately, I’m trying my best to be honest, and write a song that I, and you can both love. I’m gonna keep trying. I’m so grateful that you have listened. Be it once, or be it a hundred times. I’ve got big love for you. I’ll be over here chopping away and reminding myself to be vulnerable. Peace and Love, XOXO Tyrone

Tickets on sale 9/9 at 10am! Mindi Abair with Vincent Ingala, Adam Hawley & Lindsey Webster "I Can't Wait For Christmas" Tour

Genre: Jazz
Doors: 6:00PM
Show: 7:00PM

Adding a fresh twist to one of smooth jazz’s most highly anticipated holiday traditions, #1 Billboard charting artist Mindi Abair is celebrating the 2022 season with three of the hottest, multi-talented genre artists (all #1 Billboard artists themselves) from the younger generation on her highly anticipated Mindi Abair’s “I Can’t Wait For Christmas” Tour featuring Vincent Ingala, Lindsey Webster and Adam Hawley. For the influential saxophonist and singer/songwriter – a multi-genre powerhouse on the smooth jazz and blues charts for over 20 years – the month-long, 22-date cross country tour extends a popular Christmastime on the road tradition that began with her 2003 jaunt with Peter White and led to over 15 years of sold out holiday shows around the U.S. with White and Rick Braun. In 2007, the three collaborated on the Top 20 album A Peter White Christmas, which included her perennially popular vocal song (“I Can’t Wait For Christmas”) that Abair is naming this current tour after. She released the original version as a single in 2003. “Growing up,” Abair adds, “I was a huge fan of those TV holiday specials that featured different guests all bringing their unique talents to create a great variety show. In those days, it was Bob Hope and Barbara Mandrell, and now artists like Kacey Musgraves and Michael Buble continue to make that happen. I feel the lineup for this tour could likewise bring that classic little bit of everything vibe to create a memorable show that gets people into the spirit of fun and connection – which, let’s face it, we all need after two years of the pandemic. I love Lindsey’s voice, the way she sings from the heart and the emotion she brings onstage. Adam is a ridiculously talented guitarist and producer, and has become one of smooth jazz’s coolest artists. And Vincent, who I toured with last year as part of Summer Horns, is the most talented guy you can imagine, playing all these instruments and even singing. So you never know what may happen!” Ingala, whose most recent #1 airplay hit (out of seven total since 2013) was “On the Move” from his seventh album Fire & Desire, adds, “The Christmas season has always been undoubtedly my favorite time of the year. To be able to spend it on the road with my good friends, spreading holiday cheer night after night to some of favorite Christmas songs makes it all that much more special. We truly can’t wait for Christmas!” Webster, the only vocalist to ever score two #1 singles (“Fool Me Once,” “Where Do You Want to Go”) in a mainly instrumental format, says, “I can’t wait to travel around the country this Christmas season with these incredible musicians that I am also lucky enough to call friends. I’m excited to have the opportunity to spread some holiday cheer in all the different cities!” Adam Hawley launched his career in the genre with five consecutive #1 airplay hits, and is now up to nine, including his most recent, “Risin’ Up” (from his 2021 album of the same name). He says, “Christmas is definitely my favorite time of year, bringing together friends and family through song. And what better way to do this than with an incredible cast of musicians, playing some of our favorite holiday material. Can’t wait!’

Tickets on sale 9/30 at 10am! An Evening With Howie Day

Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Doors: 7:00PM
Show: 8:00PM

Howie Day's emotionally resonant lyrics and inventive melodies have earned him both critical praise and a legion of devoted fans. He is known for his energetic, heartfelt shows, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and his quirky sense of humor. Day's warm tenor voice "soars into fluttering, high registers, but also grates with real, pleading grit," as one critic put it. After sales of over a million albums and two Top 10 hits, Day is back on the road showcasing old favorites, as well a s new material from his upcoming studio release. A native of Bangor, Maine, Day began playing piano at age five and guitar at age 12. By 15, he was writing his own songs and performing across New England. Shortly after graduating high school, Day became a fixture at college coffeehouses across the U.S. He wrote, financed and released his first effort, Australia, which was named Best Debut Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. The Boston Globe called Day "gorgeously seasoned, far beyond his years" with "a brave, beautiful singing voice." During his relentless touring schedule, Day began experimenting with effects pedals and loop-sampling techniques as he performed, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies and guitar parts to become a veritable one-man band. He went on to sell over 30,000 copies of Australia as he navigated the independent music scene and continued to hone his craft. After signing with Epic Records, Day released his major-label debut, Stop All The World Now, and hit the road to support it. The constant promotion paid off: Stop was certified gold in the U.S. and spawned two Top 10 radio hits: "She Says" and the platinum single "Collide." After three subsequent years of intense worldwide touring, Day moved to Los Angeles and returned to the studio. His next release, Sound the Alarm, built on the emotionally complex spirit of its predecessor and delved into Day's journey from indie wunderkind to platinum-selling artist. It's lead single, "Be There," became a staple at modern AC radio. After parting ways with Epic and relocating to New York City in 2010, Day released the Ceasefire EP on his own label, Daze. New songs began to emerge and evolve at shows across North America and Australia. Day is currently immersed in the recording process of his fourth studio album, which he is crafting with the help of longtime friend and producer Mike Denneen. "There is a sense of inherent creativity and imagination to these sessions," Day says. "Everything seems to be in perfect balance, and I want to capture that energy as it's happening. Nothing is over or under thought, it's just in the moment."
