Richie Allen & the Bad Ideas were formed when Richie Allen, hooked with his old friend, and established local drummer, Jake Williams. The two went to work hand picking local musicians that would fit their vision of a live-performance centered aesthetic. The intricate styles of bass man Vaughn Smith from The Blunt Instruments, the soulful voice of Miranda Clemenson, and the transcendent sounds of cellist Kari Clifton rounded out the group. Richie Allen & his band count Neil Young, Damien Rice, and Dave Matthews among their influences. Although focused on original tunes, the band has covered everyone from Cat Stevens to the Notorious B.I.G.. Richie writes songs celebrating the pleasures of the day-to-day, wrapping big ideas in the study of small moments. The songs range from gentle ballads to gruff rockers, from quiet meditations to inspiring anthems. The connective tissues holding it all together are Richie Allen’s dynamic voice and versatile guitar technique, which can range across genres without ever seeming out of place. In September of 2014, the song "Last Lullaby" was included among winners of the song contest sponsored by the Colorado Music Business Association. In June of 2012, Richie was a finalist in the songwriting contest hosted by The Philadelphia Songwriter's Project. After a successful 2013 release of his self-titled album, Richie hit the road and has returned to Denver, Colorado to contribute to the vibrant music scene.
